Fighting CAFO Pollution

On November 20th, Clean Water Network hosted the second webinar in our fall series, “Factory Farms, a Threat to Waterways across the Country”. Thanks to everyone who joined! Our speakers laid out some excellent ideas for how Clean Water Network can make a difference on this issue, both in the short and long term:

  • Water monitoring training : one of the best ways that individual groups can ensure your waterway is safe, or hold CAFOs accountable, is to collect credible data. This data can be taken to a state agency or Regional EPA office and used to demand enforcement action. Check out EPA’s website for excellent resources.
  • Campaign to withdraw state Clean Water Act program for failing to regulate CAFO pollution : Read about the successful campaign in Iowa.
  • Petition for EPA Rulemaking : Environmental Integrity Project intends to launch a long-term campaign in 2015 to get the EPA to conduct a rulemaking to strengthen key parts of CAFO permit regulations. This campaign will present opportunities for Clean Water Network members to sign on and make that petition stronger.
